Friends,

Appended below is a news item on the "Arogya Mela" carried in the Hindustan

Times of 10th Feb.. The Mela is being organised by the Swadeshi Jagaran

Manch in New Delhi and is reportedly drawing huge crowds. It is reported to

have received funds drom the Ministries of Health, Chemicals and S&T! I feel

that the JSA should react to this. Please send your views.

Banish the spirit, cure the ‘disease’ at Arogya mela

Sutirtho Patranobis

(New Delhi, February 9)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have a stomach problem or a throbbing headache, look behind.

According to Dr Shesh Narayan Vajpayee, an astrologer who looks up to the

planets to treat patients, ‘spirits’ often follow people around and are

responsible for prolonged illnesses.

These ‘spirits’ are mischievous as well, Vajpayee says. “They are aware when

the person is going for a check-up. So, they disappear and the test results

come out normal. Step out of the clinic, the spirit is back,” he says,

rather seriously. The only way you can get rid of them is to perform ‘puja

and havan’ and appease the planets.

Vajpayee is busy these days at the Swadeshi Arogya Mela at the Jawaharlal

Nehru Stadium, catering to people waiting to get their hands and bodies

checked. The Mela has been organised by the Centre for Bharatiya Marketing

Development (CBMD)—a unit of Swadeshi Jagran Foundation—and National Medicos

Organisation, an NGO.

The Government, according to a CBMD official has just provided logistical

support. The official, however, declines to comment on the financial

aspects, saying the details would be available after the fair concludes on

February 12.

Besides Vajpayee, numerous doctors and medical companies, dabbling in Indian

systems of medicine, have put up stalls at the Mela, which was inaugurated

on Thursday by Union Human Resources Development Minister Dr Murli Manohar

Joshi. Some are selling ayurvedic herbs to treat baldness and some others

are selling clothes made with ‘vastra vigyan’, designed to make the buyer

feel happy about life.

The fair is an attempt to spread awareness about the Indian systems of

medicine, says Delhi's former Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan. “Even if

‘health for all’ has not been achieved so far, we want to show that Indian

systems of medicine have the potential to cure many diseases,” he says.

Vajpayee, meanwhile, says the premise of his treatment is that diseases are

related to planetary movement.
